For those unfamiliar, Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, and open certificate authority (CA) run by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG), a non-profit organization focused on making the Internet a safer place for everyone. The core concept of the project is to make it free and easy for anyone to install an SSL certificate on their websites, which then encrypts the traffic passed to the site which keeps your data (regardless of how sensitive) safe from those nefarious actors on the public web.

Let’s Encrypt posts public stats on their website (click here) showing adoption / issuance rates, and as you can see they recently surpassed over 150 million active qualified domains! Our own network has seen similar growth (well, not quite in the millions) as customers continue to take advantage of the free certificates. As we move into 2019 (Happy New Year!) we’re extremely excited about what’s to come from our partnership. The Let’s Encrypt team is looking to introduce a number of new features, many of which focus around furthering the security of their entire infrastructure and how certificates are issued. This includes multi-perspective validation, a Certificate Transparency (CT) log, and ECDSA root and intermediate certificates. You can read all about the 2019 roadmap on the Let’s Encrypt blog.
