It’s hard to believe its been five years since we started our Let’s Encrypt sponsorship, but here we are, and we’ve officially renewed our sponsorship with them for another year! Let’s Encrypt enables not only all of our customers to use free SSL certificates on their websites, but 225 million other websites across the web. What Let’s Encrypt has been able to accomplish is incredibly impressive and we’re extremely proud to be part of that work.
Let’s Encrypt is the free, automated, and open certificate authority (CA) provided by the ISRG which allows every website hosted from our network to receive a free, trusted, and completely secure SSL certificate. Due to the automated nature of issuing the certificates (thanks, AutoSSL!) our hosting customers don’t need to take any action to secure their sites. The end result of this is all traffic passed through your sites (no matter how sensitive) is encrypted and protected from unwanted inspection or intrusion. Through Let’s Encrypt and AutoSSL we’ve been able to secure hundreds of thousands of websites on our network at no cost or effort to our customers. By installing an SSL certificate on every site we host we’re doing our small part to make the web more secure overall, and that’s all possible due to the work of the folks over at Let’s Encrypt.
We’ve continued our sponsorship for a fifth year not only due to the benefits our customers receive with free SSL certificates, but as a company our values align with Let’s Encrypt and their goal to secure the web. The sponsorship is a small contribution we can make to ensure they’re able to continue their work.
As of this post Let’s Encrypt is officially securing over 225 million websites. When we renewed our sponsorship with Let’s Encrypt last year they had just surpassed 150 million websites secured, so you can see the clear growth of their certificates and how important their work is. Since 2013 HTTPS page loads have grown from 25% to 84% overall, a huge increase and a testament to the progress made through the use of technology like Let’s Encrypt. The official annual report shows even more insights and statistics from the success of the program, or if you’d prefer a basic overview check out their public stats page.
Thanks to everyone at Let’s Encrypt and ISRG for all they do, and we look forward to continue working with them for years to come!
